The History of Turquoise

There is much legend and mystery behind the beautiful stone turquoise. The history of turquoise goes back more than 6000 years. Archaeological records indicate that it goes back to the Christian period of 400 BC. The beautiful turquoise stone what uncovered in the ancient Egyptian tombs in the famous bracelets of the great Queen Zar.

The Native Americans even crushed turquoise into a powder that could be diluted and drank as a solution for stomach problems. There are many other subtle features of turquoise. Turquoise is invigorating while also easing the anxiety of thinking in order to help individual’s process problems. Turquoise can help you reduce the pressures of a busy life and encourage friendships.

Turquoise has also been known for its protective qualities and many traditions call for individuals to carry the stone at all times. In many arid North American regions such as Arizona and New Mexico you can find turquoise. You can also find turquoise in Persia, China, Egypt, Iran and Turkey.

Today most turquoise comes from China and has a wax covering. This paraffin treatment will help strengthen and stabilize the turquoise color. Although this only has an effect on the surface. In some cases turquoise can be absorbing and crumbly which doesn’t make it appropriate for jewelry making until after it has been processed.

There are many treatment procedures for turquoise. Stabilization is one treatment that allows the resinous material to be used. With this procedure force and high temperature is used to complete the small openings in the stone with a plastic resin. After curing turquoise the product will turn into a treaty stone that is hard enough to cut and polish.

After a turquoise stone is stabilized it can be cut and polished into beads and pendants or any other pattern ready-made for the jewelry business. Turquoise is a stone that doesn’t date and has been used for year to make earrings, bracelets and necklaces.
